Sexual orientation

Most lesbians and gay men have good personal circumstances and a high quality of life, but in some areas the group emerges less well off than the general population.

Almost every fifth woman and each fifth man has experienced one form of discrimination or another in the workplace or place of study. Social ostracism and bullying are the biggest problems.

The Equality and Anti-Discrimination Ombud enforces the discrimination regulations in the housing legislations and the Working Environment Act, but not in the penal code. This means that LDO provides legal guidance and deals with cases related to discrimination against people on the basis of sexual orientation in employment and in housing development.

Gay men and lesbians currently have no protection in relation to school/education, entertainment and nightlife. In the proposal for a comprehensive discrimination protection law, there will be a prohibition against discrimination against groups in all areas of society.
